We're super excited about the new support for onboard Intel HD 3000 graphics in Lion introduced in Chimera 1.5! This means is that it's now possible to build a smoking fast Mini-ITX rig without the need for a power hungry, and expensive graphics card! It even has working HDMI Audio!
The CustoMac Mini 2011 prospective build is fully compatible with both the iBoot and xMove methods. It's got a pre-edited DSDT available in our DSDT Database for full optimization, and is compatible with the CustomBeast Project.

Awesome! Thanks!
Tony, can you post some pictures in working? :D
Beside, great work!
I'd recommend the Apex MI-100 (or MI-100BK if you like all black) over the Apex MI-008. The design of the MI-008 makes it a lot hotter inside than the MI-100 models. Pricing is $15 more ($55), but it's worth it long-term so you don't cook your gear.
It seems that you know the secret. How can I get Intel HD Graphics 3000 without artifacts? If not, then why do you recommend such a system?
also ITX board WILL fit in a normal matx or atx case just fine, even though people say you need a special ITX case for a ITX board.
@Anonymous
Any major graphics artifacting can be solved/eliminated by using 384mb or higher shared RAM in BIOS, as well as using the mac mini 5,1 smbios from MultiBeast. The drivers are still a bit immature, but will improve- make sure you're on Lion as well.
That said, I wouldn't recommend this system if it was super buggy. I have been testing it for over a month. I get Geekbench of ~7400 running this setup at stock. Cinebench of about 12-15fps on HD 3000. So it's the equivalent power of a i5-750 quad core system with a low grade graphics card like the 9400GT.
Thanks for the comments.
Great guide, and pretty good setup:
And now just imagine i bought the i3-2100T with the HD 2000 because i wanted low power 24hour mac.
:'(
I'm stuck :S
Would there be any issues with using the i5-2500K instead or would that be a waste? I can get it for only $40 more.
I tried everything that was recommended. BUT ... - Http://www.tonymacx86.com/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=30132&start=20. And I'm not the only one
Can some one geekbench this configuration ?
Also like Biff said, i want to know about i5-2500K !
thanks
What would you recommend to add WiFi + Firewire ports to this config?
Will this system work with OS 10.6 or does it have to be 10.7
@tonymac -
You mentioned 384MB or higher. So if you put in 16GB, is 384MB OK as well?
Any tweaks for the 2405S, 2500K, 2600K?
@Anonymous-
For firewire, you can add most any PCIe card for ports- OS X supports TI and VIA controllers.
Wifi is trickier, as this board doesn't have any PCI slot for building an Airport card. I don't use wifi myself, as it's connected via ethernet. There are a few USB dongles that work- check out the wiki. Good luck!
This system is for 10.7- you can run 10.6, but 10.7 has better drivers for HD 3000.
Microcenter has the TENDA WIFI Adaptors for $9.99 they do not say they work with osx but they are a RAlink chipset and they have the driver on RAlink's website if its not already on the cd it comes with!
i still don't understand why hd 2000 cant work, its just 6 stream processors instead of what 12? :-P if 2000 worked, you could get the new sandy Pentium dual core for 59 bucks!
@ admin .. it does not work because its not supported by Apple.
Thank you very much, you are great. This will be my gift for our children.
ps. And thanks for your other software for Lion instalation 4 PC !!! :)
GREAT! this is what I've been waiting for for my HTPC
Which TV application and which SAT TV tuners are recommended for an HTPC under Mac-OS? I'm still using Windows for my HTPC's, because of a very good application named DVBViewer. Is there something simular for MAC-OSX?
have a airport card in one of these via adapter works perfect
but can't seem to get audio working
Who agrees that Gigabyte needs to offer a Sandy MoBo for a much lower price? Finally put Core2duo to rest!
You said HDMI audio works fine with this setup, but do you have any idea if the optical/coax outputs work? I'd like to build a CustoMac HTPC, and unfortunately my receiver doesn't have HDMI inputs (but it does have DVI and plenty of optical and coax inputs).
Does this build support dual screens? There are a few threads in the forum about dual screens not working with HD 3000.
Good on you Tonymac and MacMan.
thanks!
CAn this case hold Two 3.5 drivers plus DVD Drive? Also 3 x 3.5 drives with an adapter DVD Drive bay. Thanks Tony!
will this work with a i5 as well?
I would try with a Low power Ci3 with a PicoPSU, they are more efficient than normal PSU.
What about an IR receiver? Anyone know of one that will work in Lion? I have a harmony one remote that I use with Plex and would like to replace my oldest mini (it doesn't like 1080p too much).
What kind of GPUs can we fit on this type of board and case? Would love to have the power of the new server Mac Mini but with a good GPU and more upgrade options. Thanks!
Has anyone tried this with the Core i3-2130? They recently came out so I was wondering if they would work. They do have the HD 3000.
Has anyone tested these with an i3-2125?
Anonymous - I'm using this set up and my sound is working via the optical cable.
Unknown - if you want more upgrade options then you dont want this board as it only has one expansion slot and no PCI.
@Anonymous-
I found an original Apple IR module and hooked it up to one of the internal USB-ports on my H67N board; works perfectly with my Harmony One and Plex, including sleep/wake from sleep. You can find more info elsewhere on the forum
is Wake up working with the Jabra bluetooth?
@ Unknown:
It has one full-sized expansion slot, so you can use a video card like a 9500GT (but not a double-decker like an 8800GTX). I wouldn't recommend anything much higher than that due to the small power supply & heat issues.
@ Anonymouse:
Twisted Melon sells an IR receiver called the Manta TR1 that works with the Harmony: ($32 with the software)
http://twistedmelon.com/mira/faq.html#faqremotecommands
Do you know of any case that will fit this requirement:
run provided setup with SSD
use external power supply akin to one on laptops
does anyone know how this system will do encoding hd videos in iMovie?
@ stan:
Check out mini-box.com. They have a variety of small cases and also sell the PicoPSU (up to 150w), which uses a laptop-style power supply. Mini-itx.com also has a nice variety of slim Mini-ITX cases that take 2.5" laptop-sized drives, but they are in the UK and you have to pay extra to ship to the US.
I'm using a ASUS Wifi USB-n13 or something like this and it works like a charm on my Hack.
I'm also curious about an i5 on this baby!
I'm also curious about the i5 into this small body!
I'm using an ASUS n13 or 13n USB Wifi adapter on my hack and it works perfectly with it's mac drivers
Does anyone have an answer for the "dual screen" question posted earlier? Are both HDMI ports usable ?
@dual screen
I asked that question in the forum, too. I got this answer: http://www.tonymacx86.com/viewtopic.php?p=203238#p203238
@tonymac86 or anyone who's built a system based on these specs
i'd be really grateful if anyone could help answer my question.
you obviously have to go from Snow Leopard to Lion, as the HD3000 drivers are in Lion, using xMove and my question is whether any of the graphics port(VGA or the 2 HDMI ports) work under Snow Leopard.
thank you.
Blueray support???
Are there any instructions on how to build this I'm a bit of a noob :D
Will this HD3000 do HD Playback and what kind of resolution will it output? Max?
@Anonymous (September 17, 2011 4:29 PM)
Yes, HD3000 works under Snow Leopard, you'll be limited to 1024x768 without advanced features though. But enough for installing Lion.
Price update: subtotal = $312.76 ;)
This rocks! I'm going to build my own! Thanks so much!
Why can't someone just pop a Core i5 into it and let the rest of us know how it goes?
I love the specs of this thing, but I will never buy one unless I can get at least a quad core to work with it.
Thanks,
-Evilina
@Evilna-
You can go ahead and use a Core i5-2500K, or any socket 1155 cpu for that matter. They're no bigger or bulkier than the i3-2105, but they are more power hungry: 95 W TDP vs. 65 W TDP. The only CPUs that have HD 3000 graphics are:
i3-2105, i3-2125, i5-2405S, i5-2500K, i7-2600K
@foobar
thank you for the update regarding snow leopard and hd3000.can i also ask if the onboard audio works alongside hdmi audio once all the multibeast patches have been executed?
thank you.
ajmal
Can I cut a slot for a case fan in this thing? I'm in a warm climate & very concerned about heat. I'm also new to this, so where would I connect it on the mobo and how would it be turned on?
Quick question, any thoughts on a low profile video card for discrete graphics?
Just asked a question regarding a video card but also just thought about the server version. I had read a month or two ago on Ars (I am pretty sure thats where) that Apple was going to put the server version in the app store to allow you to upgrade to that, have you seen it, used it, etc? The server version of the OS is the most compelling reason to get a mini.
Thanks,
Brian
I have a d-4 case that opens very nice, can i put the MObo etc. in there?
I would like to use Aperture and Final Cut. Is this build, specifically the gfx card, good enough for this purpose? Or would I need to add a better video card?
I have this mobo in Silverstone SUGO SG06B with core i5 2500k, SSD, HD 2TB, 8 Gb ram and RADEON 6870 :-)))
(tested HD3000 perfect too)
This may sound like a ridiculous question, but can anyone comment on whether or not this machine can run Starcraft 2 @ 1920x1200? I don't care if it runs on all low settings, but if it can't run it, I need a video card.
Wifi with Airlink Golden N USB Adpater works fine in Lion. Like $10 at Meritonline
Do I need this motherboard, or can I use any of the other Gigabyte motherboards from the other CustoMacs? I'd like to build a bigger CustoMac, but using the HD 3000 graphics instead of buying a graphics card that I hardly use.
Thanks
@Anonymous-
Any of the Gigabyte Z68 boards with proper HD 3000 CPU would work- check out the original Sandy Bridge CustoMac post- any of those builds would be fine for HD 3000.
does anyone know if this build will put out 1080p video? i want to hook this up to my main tv in my living room and mainly use it for a small mac in the living room but i also want to run slingbox video off it and maybe even videos off xbmc.
@Anonymous-
I've tested 1080p video- smooth. All OS transitions are super smooth too.
I want to build this exact system but with a i5 Processor, would it be possible ? and if so which i5 processor would I use ? (I'm trying to do Small yet powerful to replace my aging Mac Mini that I use as a Desktop/HTPC.
Hi all,
I can't get the Apex case in our country. What's the best alternative (about the same size, 250W PSU, preferably in silver color)? I've built a CustoMac Mini with the Silverstone SG06 but want to go smaller now... Any advice?
Thanks, Daniel
Can the H67N motherboard use the Sata 3 Connectors for 6Gb/s speed?
If so, how does one implement that? Is there a driver that works with Lion?
I am interested in building this rig, but can you share which bios settings you used?
Also, does this rig sleep and wake reliably?
Can anyone confirm that all the audio outputs work. Also any confirmation that the optical SPDIF actually outputs all types of audio, DTS, DD5.1, DD2.0, MP3, etc. I read so many posts of working digital audio, but no confirmation of real tests on different audio types. Would like to build this, but previous builds have not lived up to the claims.
I don't have the "onboard sata/id ctrl mode" in BIOS to change to AHCE.
It won't allow me to install using the retail snow leopard disk, and this it the only thing I can assume is the issue. I've updated bios. Any ideas?
Hi all.
Everything is perfect but only in verbose boot.
Dual monitoring (2xhdmi)
Accelerations
All resolution
But in normal boot the result is Kernel Panic!
Any ideas?
H67n -f7, 2600k,
There was a comment about getting a bigger case for this build due to heat problems. Isthat a factor? Or is it fine if I just make sure nothing is blocking the fans.
Working fine but at startup how to go in the bios with only Apple Wireless Keyboard connected or wired Apple keyboard without numerical keys ? There is no del key.
Must be a pc kb connected in the same time ?
I really like this combination, my question is if I can use this with Lions X Server?
I like the idea of having a small machine - but I would love to have some more graphics power. Is it possible to add a dedicated GPU to this baby? If yes, which one would you recommend?
Does the VGA (D-Sub) output work?
there are a few wifi pci-express cards such as the D-LINK DWA-556 that are supposed to work out of the box. that one is kind of expensive though.
@ibhusain
i wouldn't even try. I have a GTX460 and running at 1080 still slows down on 4v4 maps.
@All-
I posted a detailed guide and information for the CustoMac Mini 2011 in the forum in the 10.7 Guides section. I hope this helps!
Official CustoMac Mini 2011 Guide and Notes
Do I need to buy a video card and/or graphics card or is it built into the motherboard, or do i not need one, sorry I'm new to this.
Hi TonyMacX86,
i follow your Great Building a Sandy Bridge CustoMac: CustoMac Mini 2011.. Thank you
I get everything , only i make some changes:
CPU Intel i5-2500K 95w
Case MiniDesktop 400w
One Question:
Does the 400w power supply is enough for the CPU intel i5-2500K?
Best Regards
PippoX0
Can the HDMI ports on this drive a 30inch monitor at full resolution?
Hi! First of all, I have to say congratulation for your excelent blog about OSX86... I thinks you're just a genius!
With this build you don't need to use any "extra" Video Card, do you?
I have a 32 inch full hd (1080p) TV which has a resolution of 1920*1080.
And I wanted to build this PC as an HTPC for my livingroom.... I was wondering if it would run smoothly enough to, lets say, play HD videos, play some games (little ones) and, well, open my mail, and things like that???? Thanks for your excelent page and sorry for my bad english...! (I'm from Argentina)
—Wicked system. Just put mine together. Some slight variations for instance I opted for the Apex MI-100 as I think someone mentioned earlier. Looking to mount a small case fan in the empty 3.5 bay. I didn't feel comfortable putting the HD there as it was touching one of the RAM modules (such a tight space)
Is there a full ATX version of this mobo? Or something very close? This system is exactly what I am looking for (esp hd3000 w/ dual hdmi), but I would like a little more expansion room (and I already have a case and ps).
easy question: what would me the minimum suggested PSU for a similar config but with i5-2500k instead of the the i3? (still no external video card)
350W 80+ will be enough?
thanks a lot in advance and congrats for your great work! :)
would this mobo work Gigabyte Socket 1156/Intel H55/USB3/A&V&GbE/Mini-ITX Motherboard GA-H55N-USB3
What I want to know, from any of you currently running these hackintosh computers, is... how do they run in comparison to the real thing?
Greetings All! Check out my $450 Budget Hackintosh Guide! I used all the info from the tonymacx86 website: http://youtu.be/pDJrUwSiUSs
I built this exact build, except for 4G RAM and an 80GB seagate drive, however, the system starts to boot, gets to the apple logo and then restarts. This will loop forever.
Awesome. Many thanks to Tonymacx86 and MacMan! Took me a bit as a total noob to get all the way through it, but with some coaching from my boy Syber its done. All the answers are in the thread. If you're not getting it, you're missing a step. Slow down // re-read // re-engage.
Another thanks to Tonymacx86, Macman and Toleda!
Running Great! 10.7.2 HDMI w/audio.
can i use any case + power supply unit and optical drive? or it must be the same?
I got a question that i think was answered above but want a 100% answer :-)
Im going to build a new htpc and this seems perfect except i want to use the Intel Core i3 2120T 2,6GHz Low Power CPU instead. Would that work with the above setup?
Also anyone know if its possible to use a PCIe card so i get 2 more SATA slots?
Using this exact build, can someone give me the run-down on what I need to check in MultiBeast in order to get this to work? I can only boot from iBoot, and I'm having trouble figuring out what my problem is. Thanks!
I built this computer with the I7-2600k and the silverstone case with the 450w PSU (OMG its so fast!)
My installation was not easy at first but these are the steps that worked for me
1. follow the iboot directions to get 10.6 installed
2. run the 10.6.8 update through the built in system update in OS X
3. after rebooting a few times with iboot (didnt go straight into it after installing) use Multi beast to install the DSDT following the multibeast guide
4. after rebooting you may experience your monitor sleeping upon booting into OS X. this occured with my as well. but the fix is to Tap your power button to put the computer into sleep, then tap it again to wake it, your screen will be on and working.
5. Purchase and Install Lion from the app store, then reboot
6. create 8GB partition named Installer and run xMove, reboot and go into the boot options to bring up your chimera screen
7. choose the Installer partition to boot, proceed to install Lion.
8. use multibeast to install kexts and other useful stuff
i've never built a Hackintosh before and only a few pc's, this process is not hard, DO NOT BE INTIMIDATED. but expect failure and your own ability to try different things to make it work
I7-2600k
Gigabyte GA-H67N-USB3-B3
CORSAIR 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3
CORSAIR F80 SSD
With the specs shown, how much can I upgrade the CPU in this? I like the small case and form factor but I'm willing to spend little more on the CPU. Open to suggestions.
Hi Guys,
I am using I3-2100 (intel hd2000 graphic)with Gigabyte GA-H67N, I am installing Lion OS x, the sound and network are working fine except for the graphic, if anyone having same setup, appreciate if you can share how to make intel hd2000 work.
Thanks
Phew! I am finally posting this from my own CustoMac Mini 2011!!!
"IT WORKED! : Part 1"
It is now late Thursday night.
All parts except for the RAM arrived Tuesday afternoon. I could not play with the BIOS until the RAM arrived. :(
Wednesday the RAM arrived and my friend with a MacBook Pro made the UniBeast Installer for me.
My friend said that the UniBeast installer took a over an hour to process on his i7 Mid-2010 MacBook Pro running 10.6.8 with an 8GB HP thumb drive. The progress bar went to 85% relatively quickly, but then stayed on "Processing Scripts" for a long time. He said that he had his internal, 5400 RPM SATA 1.5 hard drive set to "Sleep When Possible" and worried that that may have caused a problem.
I wish he wouldn't have told me that, because it made me constantly doubt the quality of the UniBeast installer.
I had a lot of problems getting the UniBeast ThumbDrive (UBTD) to consistently boot my system.
I was using an old HP Pavillion mx50 CRT VGA monitor for initial setup. VGA and a USB Mac keyboard (with USB Microsoft mouse plugged into kb) worked perfectly for me for BIOS setting.
I had problems, because I confused the Gigabyte Boot Up Splash Screen for the Post Screen. I thought you were supposed to press the BIOS modifier keys DURING the Splash Screen Graphic. Nope. Let the Splash Screen Pass, then when type starts loading, press and hold your modifier key. That took me more than a couple tries to realize. ;(
Then, once I could get BIOS access with impunity, I would often not get successful boots into UniBeast's Lion Installer from Chimera.
I think now the solution was to type "GraphicsEnabler=No" at the Chimera screen. Because I had a VGA monitor, I had to FORCE the most basic graphics or I would get a crash or freeze.
Then, after install went successfully, I had a hard time getting the newly installed LION HD to boot from the Chimera loader. Again, the answer was "GraphicsEnabler=No". With maybe choosing Safe Mode as well, but I would just try "GraphicsEnabler=No" two or three times first.
(Also, the answer was to comb back through all of my BIOS settings. I really recommend a set of BIOS Screen Shots specifically for the CustoMac Mini 2011 hardware kit. It would have helped me out a bunch.
Also, clear instructions to use "GraphicsEnabler=No" if using a VGA monitor would have saved me tons of time.)
Then, after MultiBeast'ing the Lion HD booted from Chimera, I had more hard times booting directly from disk. This is actually what depressed me the first night.
I had taken the front of my case off so I could slide the HD forward to put the RAM in, and the whole time I figured I would just keep pressing the power button with the front of the case sitting on the top of the uncovered case structure. This made it awkward EVERY TIME I had to kill the power. At the end of the night (morning) the power button had STOPPED WORKING. I got depressed and unplugged it and went to bed.
"IT WORKED! : Part 2"
The next day it was fine. On Thursday, throwing in "GraphicsEnabler=No" when booting directly from disk eventually did the trick! I Repaired Permissions and tested a Restart, interrupting Chimera, and adding, "GraphicsEnabler=No". It worked.
Then I did some more reading and saw that you can MANUALLY SET "GraphicsEnabler=No" using MultiBeast!!!
Wow. That would have been great to know the night before.
So now, I would simply hit "Restart" and the system would come back ROCK SOLID and completely automatically. Even coming up from a full Shutdown worked perfectly!
So I ran MB again and added Gigabit Ethernet and Mac Mini identifier. And slowly added other bits to check for stable and automatic Restarts in-between.
I had previously moved my SATA connectors from the WHITE 6GB ports to the BLUE 3GB ports because I read on a thread that it was more stable (but I think that advice was for an earlier motherboard). So now I switched them back to the WHITE 6GB ports. But I checked in System Profiler and the optical drive is only negotiating for 1.5B speed. So next I will move its connector to the BLUE 3GB port closer to the back of the board. That may make a little passageway for more air to pass over the H67 heat sink and toward the processor. I am using the i5 2500k. Without the case cover on, it's running from 48°-52°. It actually gets hotter when I dick around the BIOS. Weird.
So, after I Restarted successfully with both my Optical Drive and HD in the 6GB ports (recommended Seagate Barracuda 6GB/s, getting 120-124MB/s in Black Magic Disk Speed Test {free in the App Store, which I just got into with my iTunes ID!}), I decided it was time to pull the trigger and attempt to load 64-Bit Apple Boot Screen.
I bought a 22" HDTV to use as my monitor. VIZIO E220VA for $198 from Walmart or Amazon. It also has a VGA port which I transitioned to once I achieved reliable Restarts.
So I ran Multi-Beast and only chose "64-Bit Apple Boot Screen". It didn't require a Restart, so I Shutdown manually, disconnected my VGA and connected the HDMI and powered back up. No BIOS or POST screens showed up. I waited for the HD Access light to stop running and then I cycled through the 2 HDMI inputs on the Vizio. I went to 2, then back to 1, then voila! It worked. The screen was in 720p mode. I reached up and changed the resolution to 1080p and then Restarted. After restarting with the HDMI cord connected, the BIOS and POST info did, indeed show up over HDMI. Then I came here! :)
In my experience, VGA works great if you set the "GraphicsEnabler=No" flag manually in Chimera at boot time, or "auto-manually" in MultiBeast. The only resolution available is 1024 x 768, but it works consistently for me. I don't necessarily get any "ARTIFACTS", that people talk about, but I did consistently see "GLITCHES" when using the VGA monitor. Anything that MacOS would use Quartz Extreme to render, looked "noisy" and "vibrated". No real mystery. But also, no strange "tearing" like I saw in posted images. I have had my Video RAM set to 384MB so far.
I haven't seen at what exact point it's okay to add the 2nd stick of RAM. I am going to try now.
Do 8GB of RAM harm the MiniTuneUp process?
I have not run the MiniTuneUp. Maybe tomorrow. I don't have a 2nd HDMI device however, but I would like to hear the computer out of the tv's speakers. :)
Thanks TonyMac! I kept feeling that it would never work correctly. But for me, it really was just a combination of correct BIOS settings and "GraphicsEnabler=No".
Don't get discouraged, people! :)
BruceLee5000
Hi,
i built my customac mini exactly as you said (only the case itx is different because in italy the model posted doesn't exist).
Problems:
- after installation with unibaest hd3000 is recognized and works well.
If I charge the mobo dsdt with multibeast I have some problems so I'would like to work without dsdt. The audio kexts are recognized but don't work..chimera doesn't work...when goes to sleep i can't make it wake up..
Can you help me to make the audio and the boot work?
ciao
Anonymous, if you are using the recommended Gigabyte motherboard, you should ABSOLUTELY be using the matching TonyMac DSDT file! :)
I think the DSDT for this board is one of the most complete and extensive DSDT's they've worked on.
Remember to check SYSTEM UTILITIES when updating the DSDT.
Did you remember to UPDATE THE BIOS on the motherboard?
The supplied DSDT is specified for the "F7" Revision 7 Firmware from Gigabyte. Start with that one. NOT the DSDT with the "F7 HDMI AUDIO" in the name. After you get the first system working, then you can get (what I think is the same HDMI AUDIO DSDT) as part of the "CustoMacMini Tune Up" download.
Good luck!
Thanks for making such informative posts. As a broke college student who can't afford a mac, I am excited with the prospects of possibly making one on a tight budget and maybe even tri-booting.
Is there a way to get different resolutions using the onboard video for VGA?
I have the i5-2500k and it works but i'm in need of better/diff resolutions.
BTW I'm currently forced to use VGA as I don't have a DVI KVM yet.
Hello,
Thank you for the great trick.
I was thinking that this could be the right setting for me BUT i'd like to change the cpu with a Intel® Core™ i7-2600K Processor (8M Cache, 3.40 GHz) and put an ati or geforce graphic card. Would it work?
if so, how do i get started?
Thanky you very much :)
Looks like the GIGABYTE GA-H67N-USB3-B3 motherboard has been discontinued on Newegg. Can anyone recommend another mini motherboard for use with this project?
Thanks,
Sean
Flat out fails. Exact hardware as above
CPU: Intel Core i3-2105
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-H67N-USB3-B3
RAM: CORSAIR 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3
Case + Power Supply Unit: APEX MI-008 Mini-ITX with 250w PSU
Optical Drive: Sony Optiar
Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda 1 TB SATA 6Gb/s -
I only have SL 10.6.3 and am very reluctant to throw any more money away on this doomed project for Lion as I am absolutely unable to a. get this to boot from the HD (only via iboot) and b. unable to overcome endless boot loops when upgrading to 10.6.4 or 10.6.8
I have tried bothe easybeast method and userdsdt, having flashed the BIOS to F7.
My question is: Is this system only going to work with Lion, or has the dismal failure with SL telling me this project is doomed?

I, too, went with the Apex MI-100 and I now see that the stock Intel fan for the CPU hits the PSU. So what did you guys use to cool the CPU? An aftermarket fan? If so, which one?
Thanks!
Built CustoMac Mini according to recommended specs. Can't boot without using rboot and -x. Just goes to a blank white screen. I have updated to 10.6.8 and have installed the latest ver. of Chimera 1.6 - no luck. I did not partition the HD but it is slightly under 1TB any ideas?
Cannot get the Sony Optical drive as listed above. Can I use a Pioneer DVR-118LBK? If not, what other drive do you recommend?

Can you modify the case a little? ie: drill a few more holes for the PSU bracket to move it a few milimeters out of the way.
Created a shopping cart at MegaBuy here in Australia - parts alone come to $1000 AU. At this rate, I'm better off buying a genuine Mac.
I'll speculate as to Arzed's problem. I don't think a 250W power supply is enough to power the system adequately. Everything I have read about Core systems, they're a little hungrier that what we're accustomed to, add HDDs, Optical, etc, and you'll likely see some flaky results from a PS not able to give clean, stable power.
I took four days to figure out how to run snow leopard and upgrade to lion. The 250 power supply was a concern, but that said the system is running pretty good. I watch HD and flash videos flawless. steam run great plant vs zombies, the world of goo. Its a great way to learn how to use a mac thank you guys.
thanks for the recommended build with a 2500k 8gb of ram and old 250gb drive will replace when price comes back down i getting a geekbench of 8450
I need another video card or onboard video is sufficient?
I can not find the i3 2105 in Brazil. It may be the i3 2100?
tks
I have a Gigabyte H67M-D2-B3 I can not seem to get network card functioning. any advice?
Would this processor work for the Gigabyte
GA-H61N-USB3 motherboard:
Intel Core i3 Processor i3-540 3.06GHz 4MB LGA1156 CPU BX80616I3540

Friends, please:
For this configuration the "Mini CustoMac 2011", i need additional graphics card (for the full functioning of OSx or not)?
Thank you for your attention.
Tony,
The components listed add up to roughly $636 and you have it listed at closer to $300... Which components are absolutely critical? I'm guessing if I buy the 1TB hard drive we don't need the SSD. I have a mouse and keyboard I can use so that shouldn't be an issue.
Thanks.
Hey Tony,
I'm unsure as to what motherboard I should get as the H67N seems to be discontinued. Please help!
I could not find any Gigabyte GA-H67N-USB3-B3 anywhere, what is another alternative that is at par with this or maybe a bit better mini-itx one?
Thanks...
I dodn't know about excited about the new support for onboard Intel HD 3000 and really make happy know to about Chimera 1.5.but now i know almost of this. thanks to sharing me.
If you are in UK and want Gigabyte GA-H67N-USB3-B3
Goto Amazon.

Did I understand you to say that this build is really designed for Lion, BUT that Snow Leopard would work? I've had it rocking with Lion, but in my Plex Media Center app that is my primary use, some of the plug-ins (like for Netflix) are not Lion-compatible. SO I need to run with Snow Leopard.
Any tips/tricks to optimize for use with SL? Thanks!
I'm in the US looking for an alternative to the GA-H67N-USB3-B3. It doesn't seem available at Amazon or New Egg, but is listed as the most supported and complete DSDT. Any ideas whether there is a par or slightly better motherboard? If not, is the GA-H61N-USB3 the best alternative?
is it possi le to control CPU Fanspeed with the gigabyte board? I tried smc Monitor kexts but it only shoes system fanspeed (not controllable, too)
I the exact build as per spec except using the GA-H61N-USB3 and it wont power on. Changed out the MB and PS and still no luck
Hi I have a little problem. i ran the combo up date lion 10.7.3 in mac mini 2011 the sound driver were disable. I try multibeast with the recommended set up and still not working can anyone please help this hackintosh fan.
I have a small issue. the motherboard for the customacmini build is no longer available, and the alternate board does not have 5.1 audio out. Unfortunately i have already bought the case for my computer. Are there any other mITX boards with 5.1 audio i could buy?
P.S. i also need 3 SATA ports and the alternate board only has two.
Thanks wor the help, sorry that i am hopeless at searching the motherboard database.
For the CPU cooler, I bought the Thermaltake SlimX3 (P/N) CLP0534. Fits great with room to spare.
these mobos are not available any more!
please make a 2012 guide
It's only a month until the Ivy Bridge release. I hope to see a new Mini build then.
Brilliant! It's certainly gonna be my next computer! It's cheaper (about half-priced) and much better than my actual PC! This time, I'm "Get(ting) a Mac!" :D
I am a noob to this can someone answer my question and tell me if I'm right.
Does the apex mi-008 come with disk drive if not when i purchase the optical drive does it fit into the mi-008 also if I wanted to use the mi-100 is there a disk drive there or does the one I purchase fit? Another question is there an hdmi port?? Or is that extra? I wanted to use a tv as monitor. One final question. If I'm getting the core i5 2500k, GA-H61N USB3, 8GB RAM do I need an SSD or am I missing a hard Drive or niether. This is first computer I'm building with no experience. Please help if you can
Im going to use this set-up exactly how it is, my question is directed to anyone who records music (or anyone who can answer my question):
I want to run Pro Tools on here, will this set-up give me any problems?
Anyone know if this case will work with this kit?? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CiT-S001-Desktop-Tower-mATX-Case-450W-PSU-Included-/200707723986?pt=UK_Computing_DesktopComponents_RL&hash=item2ebb1cd2d2
I found the b3 on ebay
Arzed -
Yes it will only work with lion because it supports the HD3000.
Making a hackintosh is not for the faint of heart or impatient. If you want it to work out of the box, buy a real mac.
Has anyone run this set up with a seagate hybrid drive?
@???
seems the H61 supports 5.1 audio, or am i wrong?
How do you update the bios from inside the runninbg mac. I've extracted the file .f7 but what do you do with it
