Since the 10.7 Lion USB Thumb Drive became available, we've been inundated with requests for a method of using it for direct Lion installation. To this end, we've made a special new version of xMove. xMove now has 2 options- one for the traditional App Store method, and a new option that allows the USB Thumb Drive to be used to create the Installer partition.
xMove Guide for USB Thumb Drive
1. Boot into existing Snow Leopard installation
2. Insert USB Thumb Drive
3. Run xMove - targeting blank partition or drive
4. Reboot and choose Installer
5. Install Lion
2. Insert USB Thumb Drive
3. Run xMove - targeting blank partition or drive
4. Reboot and choose Installer
5. Install Lion
Unfortunately, it is proving exceedingly difficult to boot the USB Thumb Drive directly. Because of the layout changes of the media in comparison to Snow Leopard, it's a multi-stage installation process necessitating changes to the bootloader. We are still actively testing and working on a method that will not require access to Snow Leopard 10.6 to install Lion, but there is no ETA for this as of yet. Until then, we recommend xMove + MultiBeast for retail installation.
Thanks for hanging in there and good luck!

Good on you TonyMac & MacMan.
Thanks for everything that you guys have contributed to the Hack1nt0sh scene.
All the Best from the land down under.
Thank you! This was very helpful!
Great job Tony, however, as an experienced user, I believe xMove 1.1 is for added simplicity. Can't we just find the "InstallESD.dmg" file from the thumb drive, mount it, and run the older xMove?
If you pick "app store", it do the same as the old xmove or are there some enchancment ?
Is it possible to install Lion without the Snow Leopard partition? Like the iBoot methode with the Snow Leopard Retail Disk? I thought the Lion Thumb would making that possible..
Thanks and keep up the good work!
@Anonymous-
The App Store selection is still the same from xMove 1.0.

As I stated in the post:
"We are still actively testing and working on a method that will not require access to Snow Leopard 10.6 to install Lion, but there is no ETA for this as of yet. Until then, we recommend xMove + MultiBeast for retail installation."
Don't install ethernet multibeast drivers if internet works already !

Not true, Ive installed mine with no problem.
Can Xmove be ran within lion 10.7.2 and installed to the usb drive, or does the program specifically have to be run from within Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
If it HAS to be run from within 10.6.8, does it matter if the chimera boot loader is installed on another drive? Or in order to properly install move to the usb drive, does the boot loader have to be installed on the same drive as the snow leopard installation?
Thanks you guys. This is great!
@Anonymous
Why risk if it works ?
Hi'
Thanks, very nice to see the Thumb Drive Installation Methode in progress.
cheers
Thanks tonymacx86!!
Thanks Tony & MacMan! My Dell V430 runs Lion native (no additional kexts required) sweeeeeet with these latest versions of rBoot and xMove. Just about to get my Dell N5010 laptop going which rBoot-LE is doing just fine.
Thanks again for all these updated tools. Making a Mac is just so easy now!!
Posting from my new Hackintosh!!
Update to lion.as you can see, many can't even boot installion of lion, because of 64bit compatibility issue.how about making a clear demo on how to make lion installer for x86 machines and how to boot with that with no restart or reboot issue.Mine is Asus K42Jc.
Good job!
This is a great news for anyone who interested in Lion.
May I have one silly question, do xMove works on windows bootup to install lion on another partition?
I have installed 10.8 on a new system [i5 (socket 1156) 760 / Gigabyte P55M-UD2 MB]
MultiBeast 3.9 was run, and the system has been working with no issues (except Sleep)
For an installation of Lion from a Thumb drive I created the Installer partition and ran xMove 1.1 to move the files to that partition.
After the reboot, the USB keyboard works to select Installer from the boot screen,
but almost immediately thereafter the USB keyboard & USB mouse are disabled, so when
the first Lion install screen appears I can go no further. [No diiferent result switching the keyboard/mouse.]
Anyone have a fix? Thanks

I've answered by question above. I booted my 10.8 system with rBoot and selected Installer and the USB keyboard & mouse worked so I completed the Lion installation.
Well, I was a bit premature about a resolution. Post install of MultiBeast 4.0.2, I still have to use rBoot and then boot my Lion disk in order to have a working USB keyboard and USB mouse. So, I had to use rBoot to run the Installer and to boot the Lion disk - if I want a working keyboard/mouse.
[Odd, because this was a non-issue with 10.6.8.]
Any thoughts about a fix would be appreciated.
I downloaded Lion for my Macbook Pro from the Mac Store but burnt the .DMG file to DVD before I started the install. Will the USB method work with the bootable DVD in made?
The USB Key is great and works well with Tony's xmove to prepare a boot drive for a new computer install or existing system.
.
1. Using an existing Mac or SnowLep Hackintosh, Stick in the new Lion Apple USB drive,
2. GUID format a separate flash drive/USB stick/SD card) and then GUID format a spare SATA drive (external or internal sata temporarily plugged in) for a new computer.
2. Run xmove to copy over the install from the Apple Lion USB drive to the formatted seperate flash drive/usb stick/sd card.
3. Install Chimera to the seperate flash drive.
4. close down compute and put the spare sata (your intended Lion drive) and the separate flash drive/usb stick/sd card into new puter.
5. Switch on and at the bhimera boot prompt istall onto the new SATA disk from the Separate USB flash drive. NOT the apple Lion Install USB.
Done.
sadly, the MacOS 10.7.2 purchased from appstore _does_ a full install over a previously installed partition. currently I am waiting for the install to finish so I can attempt to run xmove, which I believe won't find any files after the restart (process takes 33 minutes)
