Today Intel lifted the Non-Disclosure Agreement on it's new Sandy Bridge LGA 1155 next generation performance chipset and CPUs. The good news is, we've already successfully installed Mac OS X Snow Leopard!
The bad news is, until Apple uses these CPUs, it's a bit of a science experiment, as you'll need to use a "patched" non-standard Darwin kernel in order to boot the system. For those of you buying new systems anyway, we're opening a special section of the forum dedicated to Sandy Bridge.
PLEASE NOTE: Sandy Bridge CPUs and chipsets are not currently supported natively by Mac OS X Snow Leopard. We can't recommend Sandy Bridge systems yet, as there is no official support. Hence, please don't view this as buying advice. We're providing this as a service for early Sandy Bridge adopters- and don't recommend using a patched kernel for the long-term. The vanilla kernel is a much more desirable solution for a stable system.
The patched kernel used for these experiments is based on the Mac OS X 10.0.0 kernel that has been altered to run on unsupported CPUs by Qoopz and the ProjectOSX team.

I knew you were going to be the first with this stuff !
You guys rock !!!
Kudos,
Lnx2Mac
So was it on a motherboard that runs off of BIOS or UEFI? Did all the other features (sound, USB, etc) work? Details, details!!! =^)
Hey, Thanks guys, i was just reading today that sandy bridge is officially released, My big questions are Video, Video, Video i loved the days of the GMA 950, even though is was crappy it WORKED, it was nice when i built Mac for my whole family i didn't have to buy video cards, i would be so pleased if the integrated video worked at one point, i guess its up to apple to figure out if they would like to use it.
Great news! Memory performance/bandwidth shows faster than my OC'd DDR3 @ 1920MHz. Is that right? I just wish Intel would slow down a little; socket 1156 P55 systems came out little over a year ago.
Yeah Great news!
now I hope i'll can do the same on my MSI P67A-GD65
Sweet, already ordered an Asus P8P67 PRO
this is ggreat w/ all this make me stare building one i like use for miusic production i using ableton
but i understand is some things a but the sound to i need know cud you explain me more? one more thing what is the option on motherboards for music?
how stable is your system with patched kernel? do you experience kernel panics? do you have full functionality of all sandy bridge features (except graphics) with this kernel?
Thank for this guide! i just got my sandy bridge laptop and was trying it out on my own with no success. Now its time to try this!
Ha - heart stopped for a second as I just ordered an ION board (need IGP support). This post should clarify that the test build is CPU only and IGP is not currently supported - although we all hope next gen macbooks bring IGP 2000 or even 3000 support
@ guy who uses Ableton - i'm going to build a sandy bridge rig for music production as well, i use logic, reason and ableton. you should use a USB or even better Firewire audio interface.
for music production you would never use the intergrated AD/DA converters of a motherboard.
Great job TonyMacx86 & MacMan...looks like a cameo of this can be found on engadget.com

My m-audio firewire 410 gets a lot of love... now if only they'd release SL drivers for my Delta 44. :\
Oh, and you are the bee's knees, Tony.
ASUS P8P67 implements EFI "BIOS". Gigabyte P67A-UD4 uses Award BIOS.
Best simplest SB Mobo = ASUS?
Crazy fast work! Nice!
I read that the Sadnbridge Benchmarks have been dissapointing and no better or worse than the current Gen?
The performance is distressingly low. I notice that the iMac i7 870 @ 2.93 GHz scores over 9000.
Does anyone know if the gigabyte boards will work? especially the p67a-ud3p? Please let me know which motherboards will work for $150 and down.
I'd also love to know which mainboard was used and if the community thinks that an EFI board will be better to use with OSX86
what mainboard was used?
I also wonder if the commity thinks that an EFI board (like asus) will be better to support future OSX86 installations?! Andy guess?
I might just go and get an ASUS (EFI) board next week, the cpus's are just too good and Apple is going to adopt them for sure.
Sandy Bridge has Intel "insider" technology - so kiss ripping DVDs goodbye.
Does this have support for the Alienware m11x R2?
Thanks
Have you used one discrete graphic card or the Sandy Bridge's Intel HD Graphics?
Are you shure you can trust this results?
Have a look at the processor frequency displayed: 6.3GHz ???
A quick question on this. I am actually thinking, finally, upgrading from my 3 year old AMD system to iX family. I have been using hackintosh with AMD for a long time. :)
Do you guys suggest that I buy the i7-9x0 series and ASUS mobo, or should I wait and buy the Sandy Bridge combination?
Thanks,
Does someone know the board which they are using for the installation?
Gigabyte's Sandy Bridge motherboards will support UEFI in a later update. Nobody knows when exactly, though.
Yesterday afternoon I got a MSI P67A-C45 mobo and an i5 2500k, and each time I try and boot with my older iBoot disc I had made for my previous system (P55-based) it kernel panics complaining of:
Kernel Extensions in backtrace (with dependencies)
com.apple.driver.AppleACPIPlatform(1.3.5)@0x55396000->0x553d7fff
dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOACPIFamily(1.3.0)@0x550e3000
depencency: com.apple.iokit.IOACPIFamily(2.6)@0x552f5000
The above is regardless of using the -v for safe mode parameter. I've tried burning 'iBoot-Legacy.iso' but 3x in a row it would complain of bad media, when I know that's not true, since I've used Memorex discs man times before without an issue. I've tired 'dd'ing the ISO to a USB disc, but complains of the device being busy. Anything and everything that could help me would be very appreciated. One good thing is that I have a stable 4.2 GHz OC and Windows loves it. Runs so smooth. Not to say that on my i5-750 this is replacing did it run slow at 3.36 GHz, but this is awesome that I could get it to run at 4.2 GHz so well.
Thanks in advance,
Shiggitay
Here's an update: I was finally able to get iBoot-Legacy to burn and boot up. With -v tacked onto the boot parameters it shows all the Kexts loading and stuff, but then it stops at ACPI: DSDT not found, and no amount of waiting lets it proceed into the GUI for the installation to start.
Anyone?
...And here's another update: I was finally able to get into the installer by using iBoot-proper (non Legacy) and by removing 4GB of my 8GB of RAM. The only thing is that I'm doing things a little differently from the write-up Tony has there... I'm actually installing the system OVER/ON TOP OF my previous system that I had running before. I can't afford to format that 750 GB partition, and I don't have a spare HDD to play with. It seems to be "Archive and Install"-ing, so we'll soon see. I'd be so pissed if I lost anything important. I hope I can proceed with installing BridgeHelper, as well as MultiBeast, checking EasyBeast. I'd be so happy if I could run OS X on my new Sandy Bridge build (which is really just a P67 mobo and an i5-2500k). :)
Can i Install Mac OS X on my System?
intel Core i5 (sandybridge)
Gigabyte MB15 PH67-UD3
2x 4 GB Arbeitsspeicher
S-ATA Hitachi Festplatte 1TB
S-ATA DVD Brenner
ATI HD 6870 1GB GDDR5
Ok, the above process has actually worked on Intel Atom 1.8ghz Dual Core CPU (D525)
On a gigabyte GA-D525TUD Motherboard.
I have been trying to get this up and running for a month!
Haven't got very much help at all from the forums only to tell me that "10.6.5 will not support Atom CPU".
I could get it it boot, sound and networking all working but no "reboot" without iBoot Legacy disk. Now after the above instructions and the Sandy Bridge installer. I'm RUNNING!!!
Shuts down and reboots just fine, with sound and networking
The whole package is stuffed into a Thermaltake SD 100 Micro ITX towere and only owes me around $300 all up. There are cheaper towers you could use I guess.
How about this for a "Mac-Mini Substitute"??
GREAT! that means that 1156 line price will drop a bit and I'll be able to upgrade from my "OLD" i5 to a "New but still old" i7 while waiting for stability.
It's a bit dissapointing for me having a less than a year 1156 socket that is going to be replaced...
thought it will last as 775 or at least as 1366
But cheers! good luck to the adventurers that push this blogs limits further
I have a little problem... In the windows "About this mac" the CPU is a 1.7Ghz processor unknown... Any ideas ?
Sorry for my bad english :-)

after reboot i get message "Operating System not found"...is there somethink configuration i missed??
Gaspar Shiggy, i have nearly the same board, MSI P67A-G45 and was able to get through setup with setting my cpu multiplier in bios to 32 (i have an core i5 2500k, too). I booted iBoot-legacy, changed dvd to 10.6.3 retail and bootet it with the GraphicsEnabler=no flag (maybe this is only because im using a hd5670. after install i boot first time over iBoot again but then choose the hd (also with GraphicsEnabler=no flag). But then i have a problem with installing the updates to newer version. Im trying again now with the 10.6.6 combo update and 10.6.7 imac early 2011 for sandy bridge support and post if i was successfull.
I too am receiving the "Operating System Not Found" when trying to boot from HDD. I have a Dell Inspiron 17r N7110 with a SandBridge i5. Im suspecting it is due to the recovery partition or some other hidden one causing the 1st partition to be blocked with bloatware. Anyone had this problem and successfully repaired it?
Im almost at the point of popping a separately purchased HDD in my lappy to see if that fixes it.
I have tried 3 times , but all unsuccessful ......my PC spec : i7-2600 , gtx550ti 1gb ddr5, seagrate XT hdd 500gb ,msi p67 c43 motherbroad .....y I can't done by this method ? I can't boot the DVD , or the DVD have sone problem ? Can anyone give me a Mac os x retail DVD to download????Help plz :(
pls show bios settings of new intel board for Mac osx expecialy DH67BL
ok, question on this one. i burn the iboot legacy. used the iboot+multibeast step, but instead of using iboot i use iboot legacy to get in the installation? thanks.

Got 10.6.3 installed on a Biostar H61 MU3 using iboot legacy.
Updated to 10.6.8 successfully using update helper. Now the only problem is I can only boot into safe mode using -x. iboot cd won't work either.
On the plus side it recognizes my onboard Intel HD 2000 graphics and memory correctly. No sound though.
