Update Your Retail Mac OS X Lion App to 10.7.2 [QuickTip]

The original installation media for Mac OS X Snow Leopard was a 10.6 DVD. The DVD was only updated once to version 10.6.3. In order to provide more frequent updates to users, Apple is now slipstreaming the latest version of Lion directly into the download. Upon fresh installation, no updating is necessary!

If you purchased Lion from the App Store prior to October 12, 2011, you have either 10.7.0 or 10.7.1. To re-download and update your App to 10.7.2, follow this simple procedure.

     1. Delete your existing copy of Install Mac OS X Lion.app from Applications folder.
     2. Hold down the alt/option key on your keyboard, and click the App Store icon.
     3. With alt/option key held, click on Purchased
     4. With alt/option key held, click on OS X Lion
     5. With alt/option key held, click on Install

The Installed button should change to Install, allowing you to re-download Lion. When the download finishes, the app will automatically open. The updated 10.7.2 Install Mac OS X Lion App can be found in the Applications folder.

If this doesn't work for you, try creating a new User account. You can delete it later.

     1. Open System Preferences
     2. Click on Accounts
     3. Click Lock Icon
     4. Click (+) to add a new User
     5. Create a new Admin User
     6. Log out, and log into new User
     7. Proceed with steps above.

Isn't this the same thing as updating my USB Lion Installer with the combo update?

Anonymous, its about having a fresh 10.7.2 installer, to maybe use on another machine

Oooh...Will xMove still work with it? This may be the solution I've been looking for. I'd love to have a fresh installer.

Excellent, especially for me, with several PCs using tonymacx86 install methods, always in various states of hardware/software changes.
(I don't use them for anything productive, just mess around in happy retirement).
thanks a lot.

Just did my Lion install last night using xMove, it was a welcome surprise when I noticed the version was 10.7.2, no updating necessary and everything worked! This is on an older GA-X58A-UD3R Rev1.0 build with a 4870 card. Now just need to clone the install to another HDD just in case.

Or log into your App Store account from a Snow Leopard boot volume. It will think you're installing on that drive and give you the up-to-date goodies with no complaints.

I tried doing this last night, using both methods. Each time I was told that 10.7 could not be installed on my machine, which, I'm a little confused by, since I have 10.7.1, I see why it doesn't want to install 10.7, but why won't it retrieve 10.7.2? I delete the app from my Lion partition, but I'm wondering if it sees the 10.7 Install partition and that is what is causing the problem.

I have a question, now with lion install on an usb key it's not possible to use time machine directly, it asks me to reboot... How can I do ? If someone knows how to solve my problem it would be a pleasure to read you. (and sorry for my english...)

Used this method to install Lion 10.7.2 on a different machin with no problem.

This procedure will update the OSX system, or will just place a new install app into the applications folder?

@M2rcio
It places the updated installer in your App folder, as if you had just bought the Lion update from Snow Leopard

Don't ask me why, but I needed to get my FaceTime to work properly via the various fixes out there before it would allow me to download the updated installer. With this, hopefully I'll be able to install a clean update of 10.7.2. Keeping my fingers crossed!

I'm so excited about that time down :D why 8 days?

Yes, I am also excited about the countdown! I'm getting paid for a freelance gig this week and I'm going to build my first i5 Hackintosh to finally replace this G4 iBook I've been riding into the ground. :)

If my parts arrive before the Thumb Drive Countdown reveal, should I wait before following other software install schemes? :)

What's the countdown on the main page all about?

@Anonymous
Either the world is going to end, or I think most are hoping that Tony will have an all in one, USB install, recover solution for Lion, so users won't have to have Snow Leopard as a base install.

I'm leaning towards the later...

I find that even with these steps I'm unable to download Lion again, and now I have no original Lion either. Are there any other solutions out there for downloading Lion, having purchased it before? Maybe I've reached some kind of download limit?

I am not getting to select a destination on Unibeast. It goes right to installation type

Followed the directions for update and it worked beautifully to update from 10.6.8 to 10.7.2. Used gigabyte Z68MX-UD2H-B3. Purchased Lion from app store and it downloaded about 3.2GB file to my /app directory. I copied this onto a second hard drive for safety (you can burn it to a dvd also). I created the USB drive as directed. I ran Unibeast and it installed the app to the USB drive perfectly. Next I re-booted from the USB drive and choose the Lion to install to hard disk. Then I ran multibeast for Lion and followed the set up for my board and indicated the USB 3.0 drivers that support NEC and Eltron (which my board uses). After completing Multibeast, I shutdown and rebooted into Lion without difficulty. My USB 3.0 ports worked! And my Tenda WU311 USB wireless adapter connected to the guest internet network of my Linksys E4200 router (it would not connect to the WPA protected portion of the router and i could not scan for wireless networks without an airport (which I have coming). My LAN works perfectly. So thanks for these wonderful instructions and the good work being done.
