PC-EFI 10.6 Released: P55 Supported By Default

Today, netkas released PC-EFI 10.6. It is based on Chameleon RC3. According to his post:

New in this release:
* Support for desktop Radeons 4300/4500/4600 in GraphicsEnabler
* Added system-id fix, system doesn’t forget your keyboard settings anymore
* Added fix for lynnfield cpus

I put together an unofficial installer package using netkas' source. Just run it and reboot! You can also use this on a fresh system to install Chameleon.

Download the PC-EFI 10.6 Installer Package

Please note that this is an unofficial release, and any issues related should not be submitted to netkas or the Chameleon team. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Wow, thanks for the heads-up on this one.

Quick and stupid question: does your installer include Chameleon? Or just install Chameleon (which release) after installing the pc-efi 10.6?

thx and cheers for the good work!

This is a full version of the default Chameleon RC3 bootloader modified by netkas and named PC-EFI 10.6- no need to install anything else. Hope this helps!

Hi Tony. I see so many variations of the boot loader; Chameleon RC3 RC4 RC5, EFI 10.5 10.6. I know EFI is just a modified Chameleon etc.. Is there anywhere we can see how they differ. I have my machine running with 2 HDs now. OSX on a 250GB and W7 on a 1.5 GB. My original goal was to put both on the 1.5 GB with a 3rd for each OS and the other 3rd for shared storage. Back when I did the install we were in the early stages of P55 MB use and it was a learning process. My machine still has issues with power management, It won't wake up and it also will not turn completely off when I quit OSX. I attribute this to my DSDT file. I plan to start new and will save my DSDT file at each step along the way and perform 1 mod at a time. But I want to know what boot loader will be the best option for me. Also still looking for instructions on building a slipstreamed OSX boot DVD. I know you were waiting to see if Apple will release a newer version of the SL retail disc. But sure would be cool to have one.

Hi Tonymac

Much appreciated, thanks, seems to boot very quickly 14 spins of the wheel.

I notice that there is a debug active on the initial boot screen, can this be made false???

Also what about the boot0 and boot1h - they too must need to be changed if it is based on RC3??? The file actual boot file is much bigger than AsereBLN's, but is quicker...

What changes did you applied to netkas source?

So, if I am using RC4 I should not use this?

I am happy with the RC4 but the computer can't wake-up from sleep so I keep it running 24/7. I have an AsRock P55-Pro board and a Core i5 750 processor and NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS video card. I am using your modified DSDT for this board.

Are the features and compatibilities of the various RC versions summarized in one place anywhere? Would you suggest waiting until the dust settles around RC5 before tinkering further?

memory information is not shown in System Profiler and it hangs on shutdown for me. i only have fakesmc and LegacyHDA in /Extra/Extensions and used AsereBLN's boot file. should i put in a different boot file?

Hi tmx86,
what is the advantage compared to the Chameleon 2.0 RC5 Prerelease 6 Installer you posted recently?

cheers Horqai

@lectrcman @Tom R. @Horqai
Yeah- there are a lot of forks of the Chameleon project- much development going on right now. It's all positive- just test them all and see what works best for you particular setup. I put a few pros/cons in this thread- please add your own if you'd like to do some testing.

@tonyd
The debug thing is annoying- I know. I think there's a flag you can set before you compile the source. But I haven't found it yet… You may ask rekursor on the Insanelymac forum. The boot0 and boot1h files are replaced using the package installer. Like I said, use what works best! Thanks for testing!

@Anonymous
I made no changes to the PC-EFI 10.6- just compiled the source from netkas' site. :)

@rich
The memory recognition (AsereBLN 1.1.7) and restart fix hasn't been applied to PC-EFI 10.6.

lectrcman said...

I see the Chameleon RC4 - AsereBLN 1.1.7 has a con of no embedded theme. Does that mean I can't use a theme at all? I have a custom theme I made and would be using it.

longtom said...

ok for me.
HD are new detected (for TimeMachine and iTunes..)

tmx86 said...

@lectrcman
Just place the theme in your Extra folder, and name it Themes/Default, and AsereBLN's booter will recognize it. Here's my generic theme with tonymacx86 Forum logo. Just drop in /Extra folder.

How to uninstall this?
thx

tmx86 said...

@Madslack
Either manually delete and replace the boot file in the root of the partition, or to install the full Chameleon package with new boot0 and boot1h run one of the installers from this post:

Hi Tony,

Am I able to install PC-EFI 10.6 over PC EFI 10.1 or I have to begin from scratch and reinstall my snowleopard disk?

Also If my inderstanding is good, in your PC-EFI 10.6 Installer Package there is a support for my asus pcie rad eah4350 graphic card?

Thanks again for all the good work you're doing

tmx86 said...

@sirius19
Yeah- just run the installer- and you won't have to replace any boot files. :) You'll have to test for graphics stuff- not too up on ATI cards, but the GraphicsEnabler=Yes should pick it up.

tonyd said...

HI Tony - your advice input always much appreciated.

I do not know whether AsereBLN has accepted recursor's request to join the team, as all those reinventing "the wheel" only serves to confuse people. My rig runs fine with AsereBLN's boot with the Netkas 10.6 effort memory is not autorecognised, processor not regognised, shutdown not clean requiring a reset in order to reboot, and the Netkas 10.6 is twice the size compared to Asere's effort.

So although I agree we use which one works best for us - there appear to be a lot of negative issues for most people with the new Netkas boot.

I so wish these guys would work together.

By the way Asere put out 1.8 last friday with good documented changes. I like it....

@tonyd
I agree that everyone should combine efforts for the greater good, but there's also something to be said for independent development.

Just to answer your question, I'm pretty sure the reason why netkas' boot is larger is that the the default boot has an embedded theme- Asere's has none by default, making it 160kb. But there are advantages to this version, as it enables certain ATI cards function automatically with GraphicsEnabler.

Also, remember that Asere pulled some of netkas' code from PC-EFI 10.5 to integrate into his effort, therefore enhancing graphics detection, but not as well as PC-EFI 10.6. My guess is that Asere will again incorporate netkas' PC-EFI 10.6 code in the next release.

Added fix for lynnfield cpus – where is it?
With netkas 10.6 bootloader my Core i7 860@3.62GHz detected as Unknown 3.73GHz

tmx86 said...

@ZOleg
It's not to recognize lynnfield cpus it's to correct the 'system too fast' issue that was previously integrated into the boot file in tonymacx86-snowleopard and Chameleon RC4. We'll have to wait until 10.6.3 or later for CPU recognition in About this Mac.

ZOleg said...

Ok, but why CPU freq detected incorrectly?

tony 10.6.3 Build 10D552 is out if you can get your hands on it to test. i checked the torrents but no avail.

Help. I installed 10.6 on my i7 860 w/Intel DP55WB mobo rig using the instructions at http://tonymacx86.blogspot.com/2009/12/install-os-x-snow-leopard-directly-from.html with the tonymacx86-P55BootCD-Intel CD.

I got to Step 2, Part 13 of the instructions and got stuck, I could not figure out how that was supposed to work "Click and drag boot, DSDT.aml, and Extra from tonymacx86-snowleopard to Snow Leopard."

Frustrated with this, I did some more looking around on the blog. So I found this blog entry and installed PC-EFI 10.6 after booting into the OS with my Tonymacx86 Intel Boot CD.

Thing is, I *still* can't boot into OS X without using the Boot CD. I don't know if it's because I didn't do Step 2.13 right, but as soon as I try booting off my HDD, (in PC EFI) verbose mode
it gets to line 13 or so "Starting Darwin x86_64" and then the system instantly reboots.

Also, my Ethernet connection is still not working.

I'm stuck... Help please!

tmx86 said...

@Anonymous-
Frustrating I know- but you're almost there. The reason why you can't boot is because you haven't updated to 10.6.2- the mach_kernel from 10.6 will cause reboots. Download and install the 10.6.2 Combo Update, and you'll be able to boot.

Otherwise, you can test my new MultiBeast to install 10.6.0 patched kernel and any other components you may need- including ethernet.

Don't know if it the right place to ask but..

Chameleon gui(were you can select partition to boot from) is slow, animation is not smooth, progress bar is also stuttering. I tried different versions of Chameleon 2/PC EFI it's all the same. Also I tested it with GraphicsEnabler=Yes and NVEnabler 64.kext no difference.
Maybe it's a problem with my Graphics card.

It's only a boot loader problem, after boot MacOS run very good and very smooth.

My config is
MB: Gigabyte P55-US3L
video: Zotac Geforce 250GTS 512MB
CPU: Core i5-750

Thanks for the work! The installer ran without a hitch. I installed it to an HFS partition on a USB stick, and it reached the Chameleon drive choice screen. It recognized my OS X partition on the same USB drive, which came from a retail DVD. It's a 16GB Centon stick. It's as far as I've gotten with this drive, and I've tried a few methods, so I'm impressed––but I get a kernel panic. I'll post the trace if someone will help!

Install of PC-EFI 10.6 was successful, but it did not overwrite the previous bootloader. Both are on the hard drive. Does PC-EFI 10.6 not have themes included?
